Increased demand by China for commodities has impacted natural resources and local people in Latin America, at a time when climate change has created an urgency for sustainable practices. This report aims to contribute to a nuanced view of Chinese major investments and trade, analyzing the soy, copper, and beef industries. Both Latin America and China are reproducing the roles assigned to them in international markets. Food and minerals are what Latin American countries have historically relied on for trade. At the same time, China’s consumption levels are not beyond expectations for a middle-income country. What is concerning is that Latin America is not adopting practices to maintain this relationship sustainably at a time when the world is getting closer to its tipping point, thresholds beyond which an ecosystem reorganizes, often abruptly or irreversibly.Once this point is reached, certain environmental impacts can no longer be avoided, even if remediation is implemented later.
