Die Wirtschaft meldet schwache Wachstumszahlen für 2013 und geht auch für das laufende Jahr von einem verhaltenen Anstieg des Bruottoinlandsprodukts aus.

Auch für das laufende Jahr sind die Prognosen verhalten: Das Wirtschaftswachstum dürfte angesichts der weniger stark steigenden Einkommen und Beschäftigungszahlen, der hohen Inflation, des schlechteren Zugangs zu Krediten und gesunkenen Vertrauens der Unternehmer und Konsumenten gering ausfallen.

Die Großbank UBS hat mit der Banco do Brasil eine strategische Partnerschaft vereinbart. Das Ziel dieser Kooperation ist die Gründung einer Investmentbank, an der die UBS eine Mehrheit von 50,01% halten und den operativen Chef stellen wird. Die neue Bank soll Kunden aus Brasilien und anderen Teilen Lateinamerikas bei Fusionen und Übernahmen beraten.

Der brasilianische Markt für Erneuerbare Energien wächst zunehmend. Der Energiemarkt des Landes ist in einen regulierten und in einen unregulierten Markt unterteilt, der nur den größeren Unternehmen zur Verfügung steht. Brasilien ist bei der Energieerzeugung sehr von Wasserkraftwerk abhängig, welche starken saisonale Schwankung unterliegt und die tatsächliche Produktion des Landes im Vergleich zur möglichen Produktion stark beeinflusst. Das hat in der Vergangenheit zu Energiekrisen, großen Preisschwankungen und Engpässen geführt. Es besteht Potenzial, diese Lücke mit Energie aus erneuerbaren Quellen zu schließen. Auch die Gesetzgebung und Regierungspolitik passt sich an die neue Realität der Erneuerbaren Energien an und stimuliert das Marktwachstum.

Brasiliens Markt hat sich zu einem Kernmarkt für die BASF Coatings entwickelt; nicht zuletzt aufgrund der sehr erfolgreichen Marke „Suvinil“. Seit 50 Jahren brilliert die Bautenanstrichfarbe der BASF Coatings auf dem brasilianischen Markt und hält sich seit 20 Jahren als Spitzenreiter auf Platz eins im Bereich der Bautenanstriche für den Innen- und Außenbereich. Zusätzlich werden an Brasiliens Standorten Fahrzeugserien- und Autoreparaturlacke sowie Industrielacke produziert und vermarktet. Am Standort São Bernardo do Campo bei São Paulo kann die brasilianische BASF fast 330 Millionen Liter Lacke, Farben oder Harze produzieren. Mit einer Werkfläche von 300.000 qm und 1.200 Mitarbeitern ist São Bernardo do Campo der größte Produktionsstandort für Lacke und Farben der BASF in Brasilien. Nun investiert BASF neu a diesem Standort in Sao Paulo.

In Brasiliens 16. Ausschreibungsrunde zur Öl- und Gasexploration erhielt Wintershall Dea gemeinsam mit den Partnern Chevron und Repsol zwei Offshore-Blöcke in den Becken Santos und Campos. Hugo Dijkgraaf, Mitglied des Vorstands von Wintershall Dea und zuständig für Exploration, zu diesem Ergebnis: „Die Lizenzgewinne in dieser hart umkämpften Bieterrunde, freuen uns sehr. Brasilien ist eine der weltweit vielversprechendsten Öl- und Gasregionen. Die beiden neuen Blöcke fügen sich hervorragend in unsere Pläne für das Land ein, das in unserer globalen Wachstumsstrategie eine wichtige Säule darstellt.“

Brasilien hat am Sonntag eine historische Wahl erlebt, bei der zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Landes ein amtierender und ein ehemaliger Präsident gegeneinander antraten. Zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Wahlgang lag ein erbitterter Wahlkampf, bei dem das Maß an Anschuldigungen, Beleidigungen und Verleumdungen des jeweiligen Gegners auf beiden Seiten in die Höhe getrieben wurde. Aus der Stichwahl ging schließlich Luiz Inácio „Lula“ da Silva (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT) mit 50,90 % denkbar knapp als Sieger hervor. Sein Gegenkandidat, der amtierende Staatspräsident Jair Messias Bolsonaro (Partido Liberal, PL), erreichte 49,10 %, was einen Unterschied von 2,1 Millionen Stimmen ausmacht. Lula war mit dem Wahlkampfslogan „O Brasil feliz de novo“ (Brasilien wieder glücklich) angetreten, aber ob seine Wahl dem polarisierten Land, das mit einer hohen Staatsverschuldung, Armut sowie Problemen im Gesundheits- und Bildungssektor kämpft, helfen wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Ebenso, ob der Verlierer Bolsonaro, mit dem zum ersten Mal ein amtierender Präsident nicht wiedergewählt wurde, dieses Wahlergebnis tatsächlich akzeptiert und es zu einer friedlichen Amtsübergabe kommt.

Am 2. Oktober 2022 entscheiden rund 157 Millionen Brasilianerinnen und Brasilianer darüber, wer in den nächsten vier Jahren das Land regiert. Es ist eine Superwahl, wird doch neben dem neuen Präsidenten auch über ein neues Parlament und die Gouverneure der 27 Bundesstaaten abgestimmt. Im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit im Ausland steht allerdings die Wahl eines neuen Präsidenten. Hier spricht vieles dafür, dass erst die Stichwahl am 30. Oktober zwischen dem amtierenden Präsidenten Jair Bolsonaro und dessen Herausforderer Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva entscheiden wird, wer in Zukunft das Land regieren wird.

Die nächsten Wochen und Monate versprechen Hochspannung in Brasilien. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass die Aussagen und das Verhalten der Kandidaten nicht unnötig Öl ins Feuer der ohnehin schon angeheizten Lage gießen werden, zumal das Land vor großen Herausforderungen steht, wie zunehmendem Hunger und Armut, steigender Inflation sowie hohen Lebensmittel- und Energiepreisen. Die hohen Zustimmungswerte für Lula erklären sich nicht aus dessen absoluter Beliebtheit, sondern eher aus der Sorge vor einer zweiten Amtszeit Bolsonaros. Dessen Zustimmung wiederum setzt sich aus einem Großteil derer zusammen, die eine linke Regierung entschieden ablehnen. Bis dato ist folglich nicht absehbar, wer und unter welchen Umständen Brasilien aus der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Krise führen sollte.

The economy in Brazil is the largest in Latin America. Although the country was hit by the pandemic Brazil managed to bounce back. Furthermore, technology and entrepreneurship are becoming important components of Brazil’s economy. Also, the economic liberty law of 2019 has been a positive contribution to economic growth. In addition, more and more companies invest and operate in Brazil. Now, the government aims to reduce bureaucracy, generate jobs and increase income. There are opportunities worth, approximately, 18.4 billion US-Dollars to invest in transport projects, in the energy industry, renewable energy projects and infrastructure projects.

As part of our LatAm roadshow, we discussed current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the industry 4.0 market in Latin America, last week.

Over the past years, Industry 4.0 has become a major global trend, and especially during the pandemic, we saw the need for a digital transformation in many areas of our daily lives. In the business world, it became especially obvious that those companies which had already implemented a high degree of digitalization have been in favor of others. In Latin America, 60% of the companies increased their budget regarding digitalization and new technologies during the pandemic. As leading technology producers, German companies have plenty of opportunities to use the potential of the growing market in the region. In our discussion with Nelson Beltrán, Executive Director & Consulting, Data and Analytics Leader at Ernst & Young, we covered the most important developments in Latin America.

Four takeaways from our discussion: 

1. Digital transformation needs to be part of the company strategy: 
Around 70% of digital transformation projects fail. The reason for that is that digital transformation isn't guided by purpose. Introducing technology without strategy, without identifying the challenges properly, does not work well. A missing or weak strategy has often been a problem for businesses in Latin America. There is confusion about what digital transformation is all about and how it should be overall embedded into strategies. Companies tend to implement new technologies for specific departments or offices, which, sooner or later, leads to a disconnection with other departments or offices. It is advised to follow a comprehensive digital transformation that is aligned to the company's general strategy.

2. Human Resources & Training people:
There is a lack of qualified personnel, and more and more tech companies offer their specialized training to educate staff on precisely those challenges that are company relevant. There is the general notion that companies and universities should work more closely together to identify the needs for digital transformation.

3.  The importance of data:  
Data is the backbone of the digital transformation and paves the way for the “Internet of things”, the interconnection of computing devices via the internet embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data. “Data has become the Oil of the digital era”.

4. Latin America and German companies are a good match: 
On one hand, people in Latin America are more open to adopt new technology than, for example, people in Germany and Europe. On the other hand, German data culture and laws present more favorable conditions for Latin American companies in comparison to Asian or US-American competitors.

The Brasil Investment Forum 2022 (BIF 22) will be the 5th edition of the largest foreign investment event in Latin America. Organized by ApexBrasil, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Federal Government, it will take place online on June 14 and 15, 2022.

In 2022, the Forum will keep its traditional proposal to present investment opportunities and highlight the evolution of the business environment in the country.
