Lateinamerika und die Karibik gelten als natürliche Verbündete der deutschen Außenpolitik, wenn es darum geht, den liberalen Multilateralismus zu stärken. Eine Analyse regionaler Zusammenarbeit in der Region zeigt allerdings ein ambivalentes Bild. Die von Norwegen initiierten Verhandlungen zwischen Maduro-Regierung und Opposition sind in Barbados gescheitert. Das ist fatal für die weitere Entwicklung im Land. In Kooperation mit der Botschaft der Republik Chile in Berlin, lädt die Friedrich-Naumann Stiftung zu einer digitalen Diskussionsveranstaltung über die politischen Entwicklungen und Perspektiven in Chile ein:

Am 25. Oktober 2020 fand in Chile ein historisches Referendum statt, bei dem eine große Mehrheit für die Ausarbeitung einer neuen Verfassung stimmte. Das Referendum sollte ein wesentlicher Schritt zur friedlichen Lösung der Probleme sein, die zu den sozialen Unruhen und Demonstrationen von Oktober 2019 beigetragen haben. Mit der Ausarbeitung einer neuen Verfassung in Chile könnten die demokratischen Grundlagen für die Institutionen des Landes angepasst werden. Das Land kam aber nach dem Referendum nicht gänzlich zur Ruhe.

Welche Gründe könnte es dafür geben? Diese Frage stellt sich auch vor dem Hintergrund, dass das Land in den letzten 30 Jahren eine starke wirtschaftliche Entwicklung erfahren hat, welche die Armutsraten deutlich gesenkt und die Lebensqualität der Menschen verbessert hat.

Warum haben diese Entwicklungen nicht ausgereicht, um einen großen Teil der Bürgerinnen und Bürger davon zu überzeugen, dass das Land auf dem richtigen Weg sei? Was muss getan werden, um die Menschen bei den Entwicklungen der letzten 30 Jahren mitzunehmen? Welche Risiken, Grenzen und Chancen bietet die Ausarbeitung der neuen Verfassung? Wie ist der Stand des Prozesses?

the Latin American Initiative of German Business (LAI) is the regional initiative of German Business for Latin America and the Caribbean. It consists of the leading associations of German economy.
As part of the informal EU27-LAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, to be held virtually December 14th to 15th, 2020, LAI will host a conference with the aim of exploring potentials for deepening business relations between our regions and countries.
The strong economic relations between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean have a long and stable tradition. As an example, Germany’s first foreign chambers of commerce (AHK) outside of Europe were founded, more than 100 years ago, in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. First investments of European industry date back to the 19th century. Trade relationships between the regions even further.
There is an ongoing paradigmatic change of world trade. This is due to different issues like the Corona Pandemic, climatic change and the growing protectionism on economic relations. Therefore, we feel compelled to rethink global value chains, economic cooperation, trade ways and investment paths, innovation and digitalization.
In a direct encounter between European Politics and Business with high level representatives of several countries of Latin America and the Caribbean we want to discuss these developments together.
